Get Answers with Google Analytics

Many businesses, whether online or brick and mortar, have a website nowadays.  Yours may be no different.  In the massive community that is the internet, how do you know if your customers are getting to your site?  Are they finding the information they are looking for when they get there?  Where is your site traffic coming from?  Is there any way to collect all this information in one place?

Why yes, there is!

Google Analytics is an incredibly useful tool in studying the interactions between your website, blog or ecommerce store and the people who visit them.  The information garnered by Google Analytics can help you judge the effectiveness of your site, and help you make decisions regarding any changes that show themselves as needing to be made.

Yes RSS!

In your wanderings through the internet, you’ve come across some fun or informational blogs that you enjoy keeping up with.  If you’re like I was until recently, that means you go through your “Blogs” bookmark folder in your browser and check each website every couple of days to see if they’ve updated yet.  How tedious!  Many of you have seen the little RSS widgets at the bottom of your favorite blogs, but what do you do with them?  What IS RSS and what’s so great about it?

The abbreviation “RSS” has gone through several incarnations, but the most recent acronym is “Really Simple Syndication”.  RSS-capable web pages are programmed using XML, and are designed to send out notifications when the content of that page has been updated or modified.  What this means to you is that, once you’ve subscribed to that page, your RSS Reader automatically sees the new content when a blog is updated.   No more time wasted clicking through site after site to see if someone out there has posted new content yet!

“How do I get in on this whole ‘reader’ thing” you ask?  RSS readers are EVERYWHERE.  Pick your favorite blog and go to its web page; I will briefly describe subscription methods for a few of the big readers, then let you explore the wonderful world of RSS on your own.

METHOD 1:  Microsoft Outlook

Those of us stuck in the office all day frequently rely on Microsoft Outlook for our email communications, calendars, etc.  Why not use that same versatile tool to keep up with your favorite blogs?  Here’s how:

-          While in Outlook, click the File tab
-          Click Account Settings, then Account Settings again
-          Click the “RSS Feeds” tab
-          Click “New”
-          There are two ways to get the information the “New RSS Feed” box is asking for: copy the URL (web address) of your blog page and paste it in the box, or right-click on your blog’s RSS button (if it has one), select  “copy link address”, then paste the info into the box in Outlook.
-          Click “Add”
-          Your newly-subscribed blog should show up in the Feed Name box.  Success!

Now go to your email “Home” tab.  On the left-hand side, in the scrollable menu that displays all your email folders, you should see a folder with the little orange RSS symbol on it labled “RSS Feeds”.  Use the little arrow to expand the folder and view all the blogs you’re subscribed to!  You can even access your bolg feeds when you log into your webmail (accessing your Outlook from the internet).

METHOD 2:  IE & Firefox

Internet Explorer and Firefox both have RSS readers built into the browsers.  How handy!  The only downside is that your feeds will be stuck on whatever computer you subscribed on (for instance, your computer at work), unless you subscribe again using your browser on, say, your home computer.

In Internet Explorer:

-          Left-click on the orange RSS Feed button on your blog’s webpage.
-          A new tab will open.  In a yellow box at the top of this new page, there is a link that says “Subscribe to this feed”.  Click it.
-          A sub-window will pop up asking where you would like to put the subscription link.  By default, it will be placed in your Favorites (accessed by the little star in the top right corner of the IE browser window) in the Feeds tab.  If you’re fine with that, click subscribe.
-          Click the afore-mentioned little star in the top right corner of the browser window.   Click the Feeds tab.  You should see your blog link!  Success!

In Firefox:

-          Left-click on the orange RSS Feed button on your blog’s webpage.
-          A new tab will open asking you how you would like to subscribe to the feed.  The default setting is “Live Bookmarks”; leave it at that.
-          Click “Subscribe now”
-          You will see a new bookmark icon appear in your bookmarks toolbar with the title of the blog you just subscribed to.  When you click on the bookmark, it will give you a list of the most recent articles on that blog.  Click on the one you want to read, and off you go!

METHOD 3: RSS Reader Websites

There are simply oodles of RSS reader websites.  Some are free, some are paid services; two of the most highly-recommended free readers that we have seen mentioned over and over again are Bloglines.com and Reader.Google.com.  From our experience and by many other accounts, these sites are easy to use and include some nice features.

Regardless of which external reader website you chose to go with, the benefit is that you will have access to your blog feeds day and night, no matter where you are.  Once you’ve created your account on the reader website of your choice, simply log in from whatever computer you happen to be in front of when that urge to read hits.

All you need once you’ve created an account on a RSS reader website are the URLs (web addresses) of your favorite blogs.  Your reader site will have an area for you to enter a feed address (right-click on those orange RSS buttons!) or website URL.  The reader will then keep track of your blogs for you, showing you when someone has updated.

Happy reading!

Win With Professional Email Marketing

How do you stay in touch with your customers?  Do you check in just to see how things are going and to share some interesting tidbit they might find useful, or is the only time they hear from you when they’ve purchased something?

Building a quality relationship with your clients or customers means more than just sending out handfuls of coupons.  Your audience wants to know that they’re seen as the valued individuals they are, not just open wallets.  Maintaining regular communication with your audience without directly (or indirectly) asking them to buy something each time they hear from you goes a long way in not only keeping your business or organization on the top of their minds, but in the “good folks” category as well.

Professional email marketing is a fantastic way to build that quality relationship with your audience.  Professional email marketing is NOT spam; it is personalized communication which provides valuable information to an audience which has expressed interest in hearing what you have to say.

How Innovative Global Vision can help:

Innovative Global Vision’s partnership with Constant Contact, a highly-respected professional email marketing service, puts us in a very special position to offer you specialized training and expert knowledge.  To that end, Innovative Global Vision is offering a series of 1-hour seminars dedicated to teaching you the ins and outs of creating a professional email marketing campaign for your business or organization.

The first seminar, “3 Keys to Effective Email Marketing”, introduces you to just what a professional email marketing campaign is and how to get YOUR company started on a successful campaign.  Learn what a quality email list is, decide what type of email communication will best serve your audience, and get tips on how to make sure your audience not only receives your communications, but looks forward to viewing them.

After your introduction to the world of professional email marketing, IGV provides “continuing education” to refine your skills and improve your campaign.  Future seminars include:

  • Building a Quality Email List
  • Creating Email Content That Leads to Action
  • Subject Lines That Will Make or Break You
  • Getting Beyond the Spam Filters
  • Tracking & Improving Email Campaigns
  • Surveys & Feedback: How did you do?

If you would like to sign up for our “3 Keys to Effective Email Marketing” seminar, or have questions regarding our professional email marketing services, please contact us at Sales@IGVinc.com or call 330-425-0922.

Google +What?

If you have a Gmail account, you may have
noticed a strange little square containing a “+1”

next to your Google search results in recent weeks.  If you don’t have a Gmail account, you may have heard whispers of “Google +1” and thought “okay, I’ll bite: what does Google +1 equal?”  Fortunately, Google +1 isn’t a secret code or a complicated equation.

Google +1 is Google’s version of the Facebook “Like” button.  Similar to the Facebook “Like” button, you can grab code from Google to put a “+1” button on your website.  Also similar to Facebook, you must have a public profile on Google+ (www.plus.google.com) in order to use the Google +1 feature.

Here’s how it works: once you’ve created your public profile on Google+, you will begin seeing little “+1” buttons next to all your Google search results.  If you particularly approve of a result and want everyone to know, click the “+1” button.  Now, whenever one of your Google + contacts runs across the same search result, they will see that you have given that result your +1 seal of approval.  So while the whole set-up does have the same flavor as what Facebook has been doing for a while, Google’s approach has the potential to allow you to share your favorite bits of the entire searchable internet universe – as long as your friends and family are signed up too.

+1 Pros:

  • Takes the bandwagon concept to a whole new level.   Now the page owner doesn’t have to have installed a “Like” button for you to show your approval; Google does it for you on every search result.
  • +1 buttons can also be manually installed on your website for even more +1 exposure
  • You can control which of your “social connections” sees your +1s, and which of theirs you see
  • Clean, uncluttered user interface
+1 Cons:

  • You must sign up for yet another social account, one that by necessity is mostly public.  If you’re not logged into a Google+1 account, the +1 buttons are not visible.
  • Any information you provide for the “About Me” section of your Google+ profile is public
  • Once you +1 something, you can’t hide or “un+” it.
  • Some concern has been expressed about the possibility of splitting your approval results between Facebook “Likes” and Google +1s.

Conclusion: If you don’t mind pretty much anyone and everyone having access to your profile and +1 opinions, Google+1 is a cool toy and an interesting alternative to Facebook.  Whether +1 will ever reach the level of integration that Facebook has attained, only time will tell.

Hat vs. Hat: Search Engine Optimization in Black and White

It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.
-  Benjamin Franklin

If you were shopping for an item or service, what kind of business would you rather patronize: a business that provided useful information about the company or product, or a business that advertised something that sounded great, but didn’t live up to the hype?  A business that provided pleasant customer service and sold a quality productthat lived up to the marketing, or a business that was more interested in their profit margin then cultivating repeat customers? I’m sure the answers would be unanimous. Everybody knows good business practices and good customer service when they see them, but when business moves to the web, things seem to get a bit muddled.

Picture the search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) as your customers, and your website as a digital portrait of your business practices.  If the search engine “crawlers” find your site easy to navigate, containing keywords and links relevant to your site, and free of spam-like attributes, your site will grow naturally, rising in the search result ranks as more and more people visit your interesting, helpful, user-friendly site.  If your SEO uses “Black hat” techniques such as keyword stuffing or doorway pages, your site may get a boost in the rankings to begin with, but search engines are on the lookout for these and other deceptive or manipulative attributes.  If your site is caught using them, the punishments can range anywhere from a punitive drop in the search engine result rankings to getting booted from the search results all together!

“Black Hat” DON’Ts!

  • HIDDEN CONTENT:  Hidden content and keyword stuffing are often found hand in hand.  Redundant, keyword-heavy content is hidden in Comment Tags, NoScript tags, CSS, or even in tiny text or text the same color as the background of the page.  Even if this gives you a bump in the outset, search engines DO recognize these techniques and will punish or penalize your site if they catch you.
  • KEYWORD STUFFING:  Using many redundant keywords over and over in inappropriate places.  Some examples are listed above; this also includes “Alt. Text”.  Alt Text is a description of an image that becomes visible if the image doesn’t load.  Some Black Hats will stuff keywords into the alt text instead of a useful description of the image.
  • GATEWAY/DOORWAY PAGES:  Users rarely if ever see this page; it directs traffic to a viewable page on the site.  It has no useful user content, but is stuffed with keywords to “attract” search engine spiders (making the page list higher in the rankings).  Search engines tend to view this as Spam-like behavior, and react accordingly.
  • LINK FARMING:  Placing links on pages whose only purpose is to host links.  These very rarely acquire you any traffic, and search engines highly disapprove of these pages and anyone who participates with them.  Again, your site could be banned.

“White Hat” DO’s:

  • PAGE TITLES:  Make sure the page titles are succinct and descriptive.
  • CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT!  Make sure your content is relevant and well-written.  You won’t need to scramble for keywords if your page content is detailed, expressive, and free of spelling errors.  If you aren’t confident in your writing skills, create a list of the key points you want each page to address and get with someone who has a background in creative writing or marketing to write the actual content for you.
  • META DATA:  Using 2 or 3 sentences in your meta description will be more valuable than 10 or 20.  Search engines like short-and-descriptive, not long-winded-and-stuffed-with-extraneous-content.  The same applies to meta keywords; 2 or 3 keywords sprinkled throughout your title, meta data, headings, body text and links will be much more valuable (and less risky!) than stuffing your meta keywords with 50 variations of the same 2 or 3 words or phrases.
  • INBOUND LINKS:  Focus on cultivating links on sites that are related to what your site is about.  For instance, if your site is about gardening, cultivating a link on a plant nursery’s site will be much more valuable than a link on the web page of your friend’s restaurant.  Always be thinking of relevancy!

Remember: search engines will give consistently better ranks to sites which are well-organized, user-friendly, and free of spam-like tactics.  Design for the people who will be using your site instead of the spiders which will be stopping by, and your ratings will grow –  not just the short-term, but for the long-term as well!

Good luck!

Customer Feedback: Your Partner in Perfection

“I always have plenty of valuable free advice!”  – My Mum

Customer feedback is a great tool to have in today’s competitive business world.  In the case of new products, allowing customers to sample new products before they go into general production can gain you valuable insights that you might not get in a controlled, pre-production environment.  Also, getting ideas for new products from customers who are already familiar with your company’s current products is as easy and low-budget as adding a box on your website stating “Send us your ideas for how we can better serve you!”

In addition to getting new ideas, giving your customers way to provide feedback will allow them to alert you to issues you might not know you have:  a product behaving badly in a situation that your R&D department never considered, a customer service rep who says all the right things in meetings but doesn’t interact with customers in a way that reflects well on your company, etc.  A dissatisfied customer who feels their issues are being heard and addressed is more likely to continue doing business with you than a dissatisfied customer who has no way to tell you why they are unhappy.  The opportunity to provide anonymous feedback gives the customer the feeling that they will be heard without being put on the spot.  Responding to that feedback, either directly or through a more general format like your company’s blog, will let the customer know that they are important to you and that you are working to make your company more valuable to your customers.

  • Has customer feedback helped your business?  Visit us at […] and tell us how.  The best story will be featured in our next blog!
  • Please visit OUR customer feedback center and let us know what topics you would like to see discussed on our blog.  We look forward to hearing from you!   […]

Subject Lines that Increase Open Rates

“Advertising is fundamentally persuasion and persuasion happens to be not a science, but an art.”   - William Bernbach -

From your blog of the day to an Email Blast to a business communication discussing a product or service, our lives have become more and more focused on that single line of text: the Subject Line.  Your goal is to catch the attention and interest of your target audience – without getting smacked down by a spam filter.

On the Subject of Subjects

Have you ever looked at some of the subject lines in your spam or junk folders?  You will probably find a lot of one-word subjects, along with subjects that include words such as “free”, “trial”, “order”, “promotion”, “contact” … you get the idea.  You can find lists and lists of words that most frequently get caught by the spam filter.

But your goal isn’t to just avoid the pit of Spam; you want to catch your target audience’ eye and make them want to know more.  Using humor is a good technique; if you can make someone chuckle, they’re more likely to be willing to see what more you have to say.  Try using a play on the words of your product or topic of your blog.  Use those writing techniques you learned in English class, like rhyming and alliteration (the repetition of beginning vowels or consonants).  Use words or phrases that are particular to your target audience if you can, or try to describe your product or topic in an unusual way.

These techniques can help you keep within your target audience’ radar, and out of the spam zone.
