A Database is a collection of data that you can sort, search, add to, edit and print when needed. Imagine the Database as the container that holds all the information for your company, such as all your client information, purchases, orders, products etc.
This database can be set up so you can organize and manipulate it to perform a multitude of tasks. You can organize information into categories, dates, names, times etc. and then tell it to analyze certain parts of the data and display it in a report summary or perform an annual break down of expenses etc. You can think of a database as really sophisticated electronic rolodex.
Why would I need a database at my website?
If you wanted your visitors to be able to search your site for price lists of your products or perhaps you would want them to be able to search your product catalogs. Other things such as guest books, website search tools, mailing lists, etc. can be used with a database. If you are looking to build a customer database this would be the easiest and most efficient way to do so.
